Family Libellulidae. Body length: approximately 40 mm. Distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu. Known in Japan as aka-tombo (red dragonfly). Found around ponds, marshes, and rice paddies. After emerging, it spends the summer in mountains and highlands, then returns to lowlands in autumn to lay eggs.
