Family Dytiscidae. Body length: 34–42 mm. Distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu. Inhabits rice paddies and ponds, preying on fish and insects. Stores air between its wings and back by raising its tail above the water surface, using this air supply to breathe underwater.
